Biography

Vanessa Ashbee read English and French at Birmingham University before beginning her vocal studies at Birmingham Conservatoire.  At the end of her BMus course she was awarded the Principal’s Prize, before going on to gain a distinction in her Postgraduate Diploma.  She recently graduated with an M.Mus. from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where she was kindly sponsored by the Kathleen and Margery Elliott Scholarship Trust. Vanessa has had considerable experience in oratorio, most notably as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the CBSO at Birmingham Symphony Hall in Copland’s In the Beginning with Birmingham Festival Choral Society in the Adrian Boult Hall and in Handel’s Messiah with Mid Wales Opera and with the Deutsche Bank singers in St Andrew’s Holborn.  As a recitalist Vanessa has travelled the country and has performed in such venues as Shrewsbury Abbey, Bristol Cathedral, Birmingham Cathedral, St Mary le Bow Cheapside and St Magnus the Martyr at London Bridge.

 

 

Vanessa’s recent operatic credits include Dorabella and Despina (Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte), Public Opinion (Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld), Fidalma (Cimrosa’s Il matrimonio segreto), Lady Billows (Britten’s Albert Herring), Donna Anna (Mozart’s  Don Giovanni), Countess   (Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro), Female Chorus (Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia), Nero (Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea), Nina (Nielson’s Masquerade at the GSMD).  She has worked with Mid Wales Opera in performances of Turandot, Magic Flute, Faust and La Traviata.  She recently made her debut in St James’, Piccadilly singing Bellini’s “Casta Diva” from Norma, at Hampstead Theatre singing operatic arias and in a jazz recital at “The Space” in Docklands.
